🏛️ 2026 GKS-U: Kickstarting Your Application - Choosing the Right Track and University

If you have decided to apply for the 2026 Global Korea Scholarship (GKS-U) for Undergraduate degrees, your first challenge is deciding: "Which track should I choose, and which universities should I apply to?" GKS-U is highly competitive, and since your choice of 'Track' determines available universities, majors, and even the number of slots, selecting the track that best highlights your strengths is the key to success.

For 2026, the GKS-U program will select a total of 280 scholars, divided into the Embassy Track and the University Track. The Embassy Track offers wider opportunities but is highly competitive, while the University Track is specialized for certain fields (Associate Degrees, UIC). This year, the UIC track, aimed at cultivating talent in science and engineering, is garnering particular attention.

Based on the official 2026 GKS-U guidelines, this guide provides a detailed look at each track's features, the Type A/B university list, and information on UIC institutions. Use this, the second part of our 8-step success series, to refine your application strategy.

1. Embassy Track: Broad Choices and Systematic Selection

The Embassy Track is the path where you apply through the South Korean Embassy in your home country. A total of 150 students are selected. Its primary advantage is that you can apply to up to 3 different universities.

University Selection Rules (Must-Read!)

Applicants for the Embassy Track must select universities from the list designated by the NIIED and must follow these rules:

  • General and Overseas Korean Tracks: You may choose up to 3 universities, but at least 1 must be from the 'Type B' list. (You cannot select Type A for all 3.)

  • R-GKS Track: Aimed at fostering regional universities; you can select up to 2 universities, both of which must be 'Type B'.

💡 Expert Tip: If you fail the 1st round of the Embassy Track, you might still be able to apply for the University Track if its deadline hasn't passed. However, applying to both tracks simultaneously is strictly prohibited.

4. ❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What happens if I choose only Type A universities in the Embassy Track?
A: You will be disqualified during the document review for violating the guidelines. You must include at least one 'Type B' (non-capital) university.

Q2: Can I apply to both the Embassy and University Tracks at the same time?
A: Absolutely not. Applying to both tracks will be considered a duplicate application and result in immediate disqualification. Please choose one carefully.

Q3: Can I change my major after entering via the UIC track?
A: Since the UIC track is a specialized industry-academic program, changing your major is generally very difficult or prohibited. Choose your major carefully when applying.
