Goseokjeong (Hantangang UNESCO Global Geopark)

Goseok is a 15-meter-high granite rock formation within the Hantangang River gorge in Cheorwon-gun. Named after the nearby Goseokjeong Pavilion, the entire area is often referred to by the same name. It is a site of high geological value, showcasing both the terrain before the formation of the basaltic lava plateau and the geological processes that followed. The granite itself dates back to the Cretaceous period, roughly 110 million years ago. It was later covered by basaltic lava flows between 540,000 and 120,000 years ago, only to be re-exposed through erosion by the Hantangang River.
