Deoksugung Palace

Originally known as Gyeongungung, Deoksugung served as the imperial palace of the Korean Empire, which was proclaimed in 1897. Originally the private residence of Prince Wolsan, it served as a temporary palace after the Japanese invasions of 1592 destroyed other royal residences. It became the official palace in 1611, later becoming an imperial palace under Emperor Gojong. The site is notable for its unique blend of traditional Korean and Western-style architecture. Despite fires in 1904 and significant downsizing during the Japanese colonial period, the palace underwent extensive restoration to reach its current state.
